Duty of Care
General
Overview
A sector framework for the management and support of aid personnel. Revised from the original 1997 Code of Best Practice, it sets out a Guiding Principle — people are central to the achievement of our mission — supported by seven principles covering HR strategy, staff policies, people management, consultation and communication, recruitment, learning and development, and health, safety and security. Principle Seven explicitly establishes duty of care for staff wellbeing before, during and after assignments, making this an early articulation of staff care obligations that applies equally to international and national staff. Includes practical indicators for each principle and case studies from agencies including MSF peers, Oxfam, UNHCR and the Red Cross movement.
